WA NPL Week 5 Wrap

-

As the WA NPL moved into Week 5, only Bayswater and Floreat Athena remain undefeated at the top of the table. Perth SC lead the chasing pack, who are in danger of drifting away and watching the league develop into a two-horse race. Elsewhere, Armadale and Inglewood United remain the only teams not to have won yet this season.

Cockburn 0
Bayswater City 4 (Maralunda 24’, 30’, 60’ PEN, Arnold 84’)
Dalmatinac Park

A Gustavo Giron Maralunda hatrick propelled Bayswater to a comfortable away victory over Cockburn City. Maralunda, who had not scored in the opening four matches of the season, opened the scoring after 24 minutes when he placed his shot past Cockburn goalkeeper Curtis Aspden. The Columbian had a second a few minutes later when he went one-on-one with Aspden and calmly slotted home. He completed his hatrick on the hour mark from the penalty spot, after Borbor Sam was upended in the box, before a late strike from substitute Phil Arnold completed the rout.

Perth SC 2 (Evans 8’, Rosindale 40’)
Balcatta 0
Dorrien Gardens

Perth took all three points in an at times ill-tempered clash between two of the league’s high flyers. Dean Evans’ deflected volley gave the hosts the lead inside the first ten minutes, forcing Balcatta to play catch-up from early. Despite the visitors fighting their way back into the contest, Ash Rosindale doubled the lead for Perth just before half time when he reacted quickest to a loose ball in the box. Balcatta fought back, but they were unable to respond with a goal of their own, and frustrations boiled over as they were shown seven yellow cards. To make matters worse, Blamo Quaqua was sent off in injury time for two bookings in as many minutes.

Armadale 0
Stirling Lions 3 (Shuruma 12’, 61’, Petkov 32’)
Alfred Skeet Reserve

Armadale’s miserable start to the season continued with a comprehensive defeat to Stirling. Despite a bright start from the home side, they went behind early thanks to a nice finish from Lawrence Shuruma. The misery kept coming when Robert Petkov was gifted possession and he raced away to double the Lions’ lead. Steve Purton had a chance after half time to make it 3-0 after Petkov won a penalty, only to be denied by goalkeeper Dylan Wilson. However, Shuruma made up for the miss minutes later when he broke free of the defence to secure the victory.

Floreat Athena 2 (McMahon 45’, Burton 45+1’)
Subiaco 1
E&D Litis Stadium

Floreat kept pace with Bayswater at the top of the table by claiming the spoils over Subiaco, despite finishing the game with nine men. Blair Govan was dismissed for two bookable offences as the first half neared its end, before skipper Lewis McMahon and debutant Steve Burton struck to give the hosts a two-goal lead. Despite being a man down, Athena continued to worry Subiaco in the second half, although McMahon’s second yellow card of the day made things harder. Nathan Diaz grabbed a consolation late in the match, but it was not enough to secure a share of the points.

ECU Joondalup 1 (Higgins 27’)
Perth Glory 0
ECU Joondalup Football Stadium

A Jon Higgins strike earned ECU Joondalup their second win in as many games. Higgins’ wonderful curling free kick midway through the first half proved to be the difference between the two teams. The visitors had chances to equalize through Dejan Spaseski and Stefan Valentini, but neither were able to convert. ECU were able to hold on to claim an important three points.

Inglewood United 1 (Keogh 52’)
Sorrento 3 (Sabatini 37’, Luca 40’, Salter 87’)
Inglewood Stadium

A hard-fought battle at Inglewood Stadium saw Sorrento run out winners and. A Nicola Sabatini free-kick just before the break handed the visitors the lead, which they doubled soon after through Adam Luca. United’s Kenny Keogh pulled a goal back to keep the hosts in the game as they pressed for a leveller. But with Inglewood searching for a draw, Jack Salter poked home late on to secure the points for Sorrento.
