Late equaliser stuns Newcastle in the F3 Derby

-

For either Newcastle Jets and Central Coast a win in the first F3 Derby would have been special but a late goal from a ten man Mariners dramatically ended the game 1-1.

Youngsters Lachlan Jackson of Newcastle and Jake McGing from the Mariners faced off in what could have been an interesting battle of the number 22’s. It ended too quickly however with McGing sent off in the 25th minute after a nasty studs-up challenge on Leonardo.

The Brazilian playmaker was carried off in a stretcher and substituted, leaving Newcastle with a man advantage for 65 minutes.

Mariners adapted quickly to their defensive set-back, keeping the Jets’ scoreless, with the home team not looking nearly as dominant as they should have with an extra player.

Newcastle set up some great opportunities however hit the sheds scoreless at half-time.

Kicking off the second half with some fire, Central Coast came close with a strike from Roy O’Donovan in the 55th minute, saved only by a lucky touch from Mark Birighittti.

Both teams shared possession with a relatively even second half as far as touches go.

Milos Trifunovic finally converted for the Jets, capitalising on a corner from David Carney in the 83rd minute and celebrating in typical topless Trifunovic style.

Mariners reacted to the goal and would spoil the Jets afternoon very late in the game. Goalkeeper Paul Izzy was brought up into offense as a free kick was taken but it would be substitute Matthew Sim who would sneak a shot past Birighitti in stoppage time to end the F3 Derby 1-1 in stunning fashion.
