Sky Blue & Roar fail to impress in draw

-

A drizzly Friday evening was the perfect backdrop to a lacklustre draw as a frustrated Sydney FC and Brisbane Roar split the points.

A hungry Sydney FC was held to a 0-0 draw against second placed Brisbane Roar in a top of the table clash that failed to deliver.

But while the home side enjoyed much of the possession they had themselves to blame, the Sky Blues struggling to find their rhythm and create definitive opportunities.

The best chance came in the 5th minute when Shane Smeltz created himself a yard of space thanks to some tight footwork, allowing the striker to snap a dipping shot that forced Jamie Young to parry.

Sydney’s attacking quartet was looking energetic early on with Ninkovic, Brosque, Holosko and Smeltz linking up to give Brisbane cause for concern in their defensive third. And it was Shane Smeltz again who found himself with space in the danger zone tracking down an inviting lofted ball only for the home side to be tripped up by their own play.

Meanwhile for Brisbane chances came few and far between with standouts Matt Mckay and Corona orchestrating the best plays for the visitors – who looked far from last week’s form against Adelaide.

Sydney FC quickly established a clinical defensive shape (A trademark of coach Graham Arnold) firmly anchored by Mickael Tavares, Matt Jurman, Jacques Faty and Brandon O’Neill who flexed their grip over the Roar midfield.

It’s not hard to see why Sydney currently sit atop the table. The Sky Blue’s pressure and positioning proved almost impossible to break down as Graham Arnold looked quietly satisfied with his defensive work. However – much to the dismay of the fans – this made for often monotonous play which continued well into the second half.

Captain Alex Brosque found a yard when he pushed the ball into open space, using his speed to whip a shot low into the hands of Jamie Young who got to ground well.

Some fireworks from Mickael Tavers and Jade North heated the atmosphere with both teams desperate to get on the scoreboard. And soon after, referee Strebre Delovski rightly waved away a penalty in the 62nd as Jamie Young collected Brosque on his efforts to punch the ball from danger.

Jamie Maclaren popped up to create the best chance for the Roar, leaping onto a wayward header to drill a deflected shot that skimmed wide of keeper Vedran Janjetovic.

However the remaining portion of the game would belong to Sydney as the home team threatened to secure all three points in a final session marked by frantic attacking play.

Nil all at the final whistle with the a frustrated home team and supporters alike. Meanwhile the Roar will look to put in a far more convincing performance when they face Perth Glory next week.
