Sydney FC fells Perth Glory in physical bout

-

Sydney FC sit in fourth on the Westfield W-League ladder after a penalty helped them down Perth Glory 1-0 at Lambert Park.

The penalty was all that was needed for Sydney FC to hold off Perth Glory on Sunday afternoon.

The visitors started full of spirit, creating the first opportunities early in the game. However this was soon overwritten when the Sydney midfield, through Polias, Simon and Khamis, sunk its teeth in to allow the home side to dictate the passage of play.

The first half was largely owned by the Sky Blues, providing some great distribution and width. However play often broke down in the final third.

Much has been said of the attacking threat that Jasmyne Spencer poses for Sydney FC. And she proved her supporters right once again with an insatiable hunger to win the ball and create attacking opportunities. Unfortunately the Sydney midfield often struggled to provide her with the right type of service.

Tensions were lifted after a silky passage of play led to a penalty for the home side after a clumsy tackle at the edge of the box. Kyah Simon stepped up confidently to slot the ball neatly into the right corner as Sydney took a 1-0 lead.

The visitors chased well. Pressing high in the attacking line they would not allow the Sydney defence to settle. However this work ethic became a marked trait of the Glory’s first half play leaving little room for creativity.

Perth looked often to counter through front runner Samantha Kerr who was the most dangerous player for the visitors. And it was to be Kerr who would provide Glory with the best chance when the striker lofted a bobbling ball over Sydney keeper Michelle Betos, only to be denied by the crossbar.

Things escalated when Sydney centre back Alanna Kennedy left a trailing knee in the stomach of Samantha Kerr earning the defender the first yellow of the match.

The second half began with a bang when Kennedy’s curling free kick beat Glory keeper Mackenzie Arnold only to be denied by the crossbar.

In quick response the visitors unleashed a flurry of impressive attacks as the Sky Blue’s defence was left scrambling to clear the ball off the line. Keeper Michelle Betos’ had a busy half when possession soon turned in the favour of the visiting team who reestablished their presence over the game.

As the Glory onslaught continued it was Spencer for Sydney FC who kept the visitors at bay. Testing Arnold between the sticks numerous times she opened the Glory defence with her pace and gave the visitors something to be concerned over for all their second half pressure up front.

The last 15 minutes belonged to Sydney who regained their composure and continued to test the hands of Arnold. The final whistle provides the Sky Blues all three points as they climb to fourth on the Westfield W-League ladder. It will be a long flight back home for Perth who slip to seventh place.
