You're allowed to ditch the EPL

For the majority of football fans around the world it’s the English Premier League that’s king and Australia is unfortunately no exception.

Often the great action on our doorsteps is overlooked by the glitz and glamour of England’s top flight. Many Aussies jump on the bandwagon of an English club without giving their own local side a chance. However with recent news of the EPL rights awarded to Optus it’s going to require more effort to seek out your Rooney’s and Benteke’s, which frankly isn’t worth it.

Here’s a few reasons why it’s okay ditch the EPL and turn your attention to the Hyundai A-League.

1. You can get amongst it

There’s no better feeling than being with fellow supporters amidst the action of a live game and the atmosphere at A-League fixtures is unmatched in the country. The Den at Suncorp Stadium and Western Sydney Wanderers’ Red & Black Bloc are testaments to those passionate fans dedicated to ensure their home ground is bouncing with noise. It doesn’t get any better than being there live. It certainly isn’t a feeling that can be replicated through a television screen.

2. You don’t have to destroy your sleep schedule

No matter how dedicated you are, waking up at 3 a.m. on a weekday by yourself to watch your side slog out a 0-0 isn’t always fun. A bad result and you go to bed miserable and wake up the next morning just as sour. You also won’t have to turn down your friends for drinks on a Saturday because West Ham have a vital clash to confirm a 12th place finish.

3. The football ain’t half bad

While big name signings like Alessandro Del Piero and, ahem, Emile Heskey in recent seasons may have been smoke and mirrors to some, the quality of the A-League has improved in leaps and bounds. Clubs have begun to etch out their own identities on the pitch. The quality of play may surprise those who have never given the league much of a look in.

4. The A-League is unique

Football will never truly be rid of it but compared to its English counterpart, the A-League has far less of the nasty stuff. Less diving, less play acting and less back chat are a welcome sight. Only ‘Straya could make the beautiful game that much better.

Go on, ditch it. No one will hold it against you.
