6 young guns A-League clubs need to re-sign

-

Well over 100 A-League players will be out of contract come the end of the season.

Plenty of those are talented, young players ready to be snapped up for the 2016/17 campaign. Here are six of the best.

Brandon Borrello (20 years old – Brisbane Roar)

It’s unclear whether Borrello will remain in Brisbane until the end of the season let alone next year. He has fallen out of favour under John Aloisi despite a bright start to the season in which he scored four goals in eight starts.

A promising partnership with fellow young gun Jamie Maclaren was broken up as more experienced Roar players returned from injury.

He could be one that gets away.

Mark Birighitti (24 years old – Newcastle Jets)

Birighitti has asserted himself as Newcastle’s number one this season and has already played more minutes than he did all of last season. Although he’s only maintained one clean sheet in nine games so far, his impressive performances and league high saves (35) have kept his side in numerous games this season. He’s also shown a willingness to take sacrifices for the team. Five pearly whites, to be precise.

Roly Bonevacia (24 years old – Wellington Phoenix)

A player who wouldn’t be on the list if it wasn’t for Wellington’s hazy future. Every man on the Nix roster has been coined as out of contract in 2016 by the FFA, despite some like Bonevacia having a deal beyond that time. The Dutch dynamo has been a mainstay for Wellington this season, scoring three, setting up two and creating 12 chances for his teammates.

James Donachie (22 years old – Brisbane Roar)

Donachie has found playing time hard to come by on his return from a thigh injury which has restricted him to just 12 minutes this season. Veteran Jade North has formed an impressive partnership with Daniel Bowles which would be difficult to break up. The Roar would be keen to keep him around as his talents are clear and North won’t be around forever. The player may need to move away to develop further.

Alex Gersbach (18 years old – Sydney FC)

Gersbach could be the next big thing with his impressive start to the season. He’s won 87.5% of his tackles, made 22 interceptions and looks comfortable on either end. Whoever secures his signature could hit the jackpot and he may be the best of the bunch. That is, provided he keeps his red card tally to a minimum.

Josh Risdon (23 years old – Perth Glory)

Risdon may not get many plaudits despite making his Socceroos debut in November however he has been quietly impressive all campaign. He’s a sleeper that would be a handy addition to any A-League club and one that would only grow from the energetic, talented full back that he is.
