Canberra United put four past Adelaide

-

Reigning champions Canberra United cruised to a fourth consecutive W-League win with a 3-0 victory over Adelaide in the capital on Saturday.

A brace from Michelle Heyman and goals from Jenna McCormick and Veronica Perez saw the home side gather all three points as Adelaide struggled to impose themselves throughout.

Canberra opened the match well, pressing efficiently and forcing mistakes along the Adelaide backline as the visitors struggled to play out.

In the 10th minute, last week’s two-goal hero Ashleigh Sykes was released down the left, and crossed to Veronica Perez on the far side of the box.

Perez’s initial shot was saved well by Kaitlyn Savage but Michelle Heyman was on hand to tuck home the rebound and give the home side a deserved lead.

Just six minutes later that lead was doubled as Jenna McCormick finished off a great team move. A tidy dummy from Caitlin Munoz sent Sykes racing clear down the left wing, and her low ball found McCormick perfectly at the edge of the six-yard box.

Groans escaped the crowd as she stuck her first effort into a defender, but McCormick kept her composure to tuck home the second chance and make it 2-0.

Further chances went begging towards the end of the half as Adelaide grew into the game slightly, but the score remained the same at the break.

The visitors appeared a different side in the second half, pushing higher up and challenging the home defence, however clear cut chances did not present.

The hosts added to their advantage in the 83rd minute, as Julia De Angelis fed Heyman down the inside right channel, before she finished brilliantly in off the far post.

With Canberra coasting home, Lorena Maggio brought down Perez inside the box for a Canberra Penalty, and Perez coolly slotted home in the 93rd and final minute, sending Kaitlyn Savage the wrong way in goal.

The win sees Canberra retain second place ahead of another home clash next weekend with Melbourne Victory. Adelaide languish in fifth place with only nine points as they travel to Newcastle next weekend.
