Adelaide’s season over in pulsating draw

-

Adelaide United and Canberra have played out a pulsating 1-1 draw in front of a raucous crowd at The Shores Football Stadium.

In need of a victory to qualify for finals, the Reds fell behind early before equalizing on the stroke of half time.

This set the game up for a sensational second half in which the Reds had a surplus of wonderful opportunities to secure a win.

Canberra produced the better football early in the encounter, pressuring Adelaide with every pass resulting in turnovers and the opportunity to attack.

Agile forward Veronica Perez had the first genuine chance to open the scoring with a darting run and shot from outside the box.

A few minutes later she linked up beautifully with a team mate forcing keeper Kaitlyn Savage into a fine save.

The football from Canberra was exquisite as they pushed Adelaide further back with every passing minute.

In the 22nd minute Canberra were rewarded for their football, given a penalty for a clear foul on Ashleigh Skyes.

Danger woman Veronica Perez stepped up and calmly slotted the ball home, putting the visitors ahead 1-0.

Adelaide slowly but surely began to improve, moving the ball with more intent and limiting turnovers.

In the 43rd minute Adelaide were rewarded; gun midfielder Dahlkemper hammering home a volley from outside the box.

In need of a victory to qualify for finals, Adelaide produced an inspired second half in which they looked to attack with every play.

Dahlkemper continued to control the midfield general while Tiarne Powell found herself in more threatening positions.

As the game neared its conclusion, Canberra began to drop more numbers behind the ball to fend off the Adelaide dominance.

In the 92nd minute Emily Condon was sure she had won it. Her powerful shot struck the inside of the post before rolling across the face of goal.

Her devastation was clear for all to see and the match finished 1-1, signaling an end for Adelaide. For Canberra finals football awaits as does the possibility of a potential title.
