Fairytale afternoon as Abbas returns to down Newcastle

-

A dream day for Sydney FC saw a fairytale return for veteran midfielder Ali Abbas who netted the second goal as the Sky Blues downed Newcastle Jets 2-0.

It was a convincing display from the home side in a game that was fraught with attacking opportunities and a dream return for veteran Ali Abbas.

Young striker George Blackwood had the first chance of the game as he came just shy of sealing his first goal for the Sky Blues after Milos Ninkovic picked him out with a low cross in the 8th minute.

Sydney’s European signings were reveling in their attacking roles as the home side tightened their grip over the first half, dictating the passage of play from the front of the park.

Inevitably it would be Ninkovic who played a lofted through ball to Holosko to go one on one with Birighitti. The Slovak made no mistake, slotting past Birighitti to put Sydney in the lead 1-0 in the 15th minute.

At the other end David Carney had sporadic moments in the attacking third, and linked up beautifully with Jets teammate Milos Trifunovic in front of goal only for the play to fizzle out.

It would be Blackwood moments later looking for Sydney’s second as the striker managed to break free off a Ninkovic flick, cut onto his opposing foot only to push his placement just shy of Birighitti’s far post.

The teams returned to the pitch gingerly following the break and it was Carney again for the Jets who looked to press the Sydney goal. The veteran lashed a shot into Janjetovic’s side netting in the 50th minute.

Substitute Mitch Cooper opened a small flurry of chances for the Jets after a burst through the Sydney defense, his speed taking him to Janjetovic’s goal only for the substitute to push his shot shy of the near post.

The Sky Blues continued to create chance after chance at ANZ Stadium however it was a substitution in the 72nd minute that lit up the crowd. Sydney FC midfielder Ali Abbas returned to the A-League after a year long injury sidelined the fan favorite. The Iraqi would have a perfect return as he broke free of the Jets defense off a Matt Simon back-heel to blast his shot into Birighitti’s net and take his team to a 2-0 lead.

It would remain 2-0 at the final whistle, Sydney FC consolidating their spot at third while Newcastle Jets continue to struggle to find the net, not having scored in 559 minutes.
