Melbourne City make it a perfect 12

-

Melbourne City have capped off a perfect regular season with three points against Sydney FC, making for 12 wins from 12 appearances.

The game did not come without a struggle, a 2-1 result following a nail-biting finish with Melbourne City’s Mariana Tabain putting in a stellar performance.

Despite the game not having any impact on the final table standings, Sydney FC had a number of chances in the first half to open the scoring.

The best chance came for Sydney when Jennifer Beattie slipped over with the ball in defence. The error lead to Kyah Simon finding herself one-on-one against Brianna Davey but the young keeper made a crucial save, meaning a 0-0 score at half time.

City haven’t fallen behind once this season and Tabain opened the scoring following a Stephanie Catley masterclass at 52 minutes.

The goal was a game changer and Sydney FC were caught out on numerous occasions, however with 19 minutes to go an unlikely equaliser from Princess Ibini—Isei hit the crossbar and went in to stun the crowd.

City, who had only conceded four goals for the season, looked for a moment to have their perfect season of maximum points taken away from them.

With 10 minutes remaining Catley’s cross very nearly righted that wrong when Jess Fishlock headed over the bar. But it would take five minutes more for City to seal the deal.

In the 85th minute Tabain beat the offside trap to chip Michelle Betos and finish the game to rapturous applause. Melbourne City finish their dream season with a 2-1 win and look unbeatable heading into the finals.
