Sydney overpower Newcastle to book spot in semis

-

Sydney FC bested Newcastle Jets in a clinical win at ANZ Stadium as the home side controlled the day to seal their place in the Westfield W-League Semi Finals.

However it was the Jets who started the brightest of the pair as Hannah Bromley saw her 4th minute header bounce just wide of the post after early pressure from the visitors. Caprice Dydasco continued the attack when she snapped a shot into the arms of goalkeeper Michelle Betos as the visitors looked intent on maximizing their finals hopes.

However the tone of the match soon turned in the Sky Blues’ favor when Nicola Bolger linked up beautifully with Khamis and Ibini-Isei to have her shot skim over the crossbar.

Sydney continued to tighten their grip over the jets as Khamis and Bolger frequently bested the Jets defensive line and tested goalkeeper Hannah Southwell on more than one occasion. And they were rewarded in the 30th minute when Kyah Simon slotted away a penalty after Bromley left a stray elbow in the face of Leenah Khamis.

The Sky Blues ran way with their lead barring the visitors out of the game as they entered into the sheds confidently in control at 1-0.

Things only got better in the second half for Sydney when Jasmyne Spencer picked out Leena Khamis in the 59th after the striker managed to stray away from her marker to skilfully find the top corner with a bounding header, taking the home team to a 2-0 lead.

Sydney continued to build on their lead with some silky play in the final third. Kyah Simon squandered a glaring opportunity in the 70th when Jasmyne Spencer managed to flank the Jets defense to tee the striker up only for the goal scorer to send her shot soaring over the bar.

The Jets put on some last minute efforts to pressure the Sydney defense with Michelle Betos being called upon on more than one occasion, and they were rewarded in the 76th with a free kick in a promising position. Michelle Betos dropped to ground well to keep out the skidding effort of captain Jets captain Gema Simon.

2-0 it ended at the final whistle, the Sky Blues booking their spot in the Semi Final, whilst Newcastle will now look to the final round next week hoping to do the same.
