Melbourne City a long way ahead of rivals for goals

-

Melbourne City continued to stack up the numbers in the goals column of the A-League ladder in their 3-1 victory over Wellington Phoenix.

Bruno Fornaroli opened the scoring for City against their opponents from New Zealand but it was Harry Novillo who stole all the headlines with his brace that could easily have been a hat-trick on any other day.

The Melbourne based side put Phoenix goalkeeper Glen Moss under pressure throughout the game and, if it wasn’t for the man in the visitors’ goal, the scoreline could have been far wider in the home side’s favour.

City have by far been the most attacking side in the A-League this season. They hit five past Central Coast Mariners on the road early in December, while they were 4-0 winners away to Newcastle Jets in another game they dominated.

In the player rankings for the Australian A-League, City have three of the top four scorers in the competition so far as of 26th January. Fornaroli sits ahead of that list as the Uruguayan has been in terrific form since joining the club from Danubio FC in his homeland. After his brace against Wellington, French born striker Novillo is not far behind Fornaroli, with Socceroo midfielder Aaron Mooy also near the top of the standings after finding the back of the net on a regular basis in the campaign.

Although their defence may not be as solid as Western Sydney Wanderers or anywhere close to Sydney FC, who have the best record at the back so far this season, they are continuing to outscore their opponents and therefore remaining in a great position in the table.

With the regular season now heading into the business stage of the campaign, City are in good shape to challenge for their first Grand Final appearance and championship success.

They were beaten by eventual winners Melbourne Victory in the semi-final in 2015, however, they were only able to finish the regular season in fifth place.

So, their form is much better this time around heading into the final series.

Indeed, City are at the time of writing available at 7/2 with bet365 to win the Grand Final. They sit behind Western Sydney Wanderers and Melbourne Victory in the betting.

With the regular season nearing a conclusion, City have the Melbourne derby to look forward to on their schedule. That tie is sure to attract the biggest crowd of the season at the Melbourne Rectangular Stadium while John van ‘t Schip’s men will be expected to pick up all three points at home to Central Coast Mariners.

Hopes will be high that City can go straight into the semi-final of the final series, avoiding the elimination finals game they had to overcome in 2015. If they can remain in the top two in the ladder, they will have a home field advantage in the semi-final.
