Newcastle Jets stun a travelling Brisbane

-

The Newcastle Jets desperately wanted to end their six match-losing streak to Brisbane Roar and did so on Sunday night with a 4-0 win at home.

But it was Roar who applied the early pressure by maintaining possession and shifting the ball around to help settle the game, with the Jets sitting back and buying their time before taking the match to the three time A-League champions.

Jets winger Andrew Nabbout opened the scoring on seven minutes after he broke down the right hand side to cross the ball to a sliding Brisbane defender’s boot, deflecting the ball into the bottom right corner.

Roar reacted swiftly with Brett Holman slotting a ball through the Jets defence for an off-footed jab from Jamie Maclaren that went just shy of the goal.

Jets midfielder Benjamin Kantarovski fed the ball through to a sprinting Nabbout once again, who crossed the ball to the back post for a near miss by striker Morten Nordstrand.

At the 23rd minute Roar almost hit back with a long range shot from Tommy Oar with an outreached Jack Duncan just getting his hands to it, causing the shot to rattle the woodwork.

Jets’ Steven Ugarkovic was denied a freekick from a sliding Roar defender at the half way mark before a head clash saw the referee signal the end of the first half.

At the 50th Andrew Hoole caused havoc again for Roar, beating the defence to cross the ball from the left before the Roar defence cleared the ball.

An overlapping defender, Newcastle’s Nick Cowburn recrossed a cleared ball for Hoole to just miss the shot as it was cleared by a scrambling Roar defence.

The second goal came at the 61st minute when an over-hit corner from Hoole saw another recross of the ball by the Jets for a goal scoring midair header by Nigel Boogaard.

Steven Ugarkovic took down an attacking Roar striker to secure Brisbane another opportunist freekick in front of goal, before Oar sent the 30 yard freekick just over the woodwork.

A stray header saw a composed left footed strike from Ugarkovic driven into the bottom corner to make it 3-0 on the 70th minute.

It was a strong right footed strike from an attacking Hoole that sent Roar defender Luke De Vere to the ground after he blocked it with his chest before regaining his breath and helping to defend the Jets corner.

The 4-0 result was complete when Nabbout confidently passed the ball to ex-Roar player Devante Cult to increase the score once more and give Newcastle Jets the win.
