Bruce Kamau is a star in the making.
The winger has been a shining light in Melbourne City’s start to the 2016/17 Hyundai A-League season.
City’s new recruit has shown blistering pace down both wings, using his electric intensity to ease past his opponents, creating chance after chance for players like Bruno Fornaroli and Fernando Brandan.
It is Kamau’s journey however, that cannot be ignored.
Kamau moved from Kenya to Australia with his family in 1999 when he was just four years old and began his football career at Eastern United. He then progressed to Hyundai A-League outfit Adelaide United, making his debut in 2014.
The 21 year old speedster was Adelaide United’s Grand Final hero, scoring the opening goal in last season’s 3-1 win over Western Sydney Wanderers.
At the completion of the 2015/16 season, Kamau completed a shock move to Melbourne City. He justified the decision, saying he needed get out of his comfort zone to “go to the next level” of his career.
And he’s done just that.
Kamau looked exceptionally promising in Melbourne City’s 1-0 win over Wellington Pheonix in Round One, his creativity and dash causing havoc for the Phoenix defence.
He continued his red-hot form in the Melbourne Derby, scoring and assisting once in the light blue side’s 4-1 thumping of Victory. Unfortunately Kamau was substituted early in City’s Round Three loss to Perth Glory after a ball to the face left him dazed and groggy.
Kamau has flown under the radar with so many stellar City performances in the first month, but his influence and impact cannot be underestimated.
After City lost Mooy to English Premier League giant Manchester City, many critics were quick to put a line through them. Albeit different positions, Kamau has theoretically filled that hole. While his touch is impressive, Kamau’s ability to change directions quickly has left defenders reeling.
What sets Kamau apart though, is his defensive accountability. He runs both ways. And that’s a major asset for manager John van’t Schip who can consistently rely on the youngster.
Kamau will return this Friday night to face his old club after missing Melbourne City’s epic FFA Cup final win on Tuesday. It is shaping up to be a beauty.
