W-League | Jets sit first following Glory win at home

-

Newcastle Jets took down Perth Glory 1-0 at McDonald Jones Stadium to end their six match winless streak at home.

Perth’s Vanessa Di Bernardo opened the shooting in the early minutes with a long-range effort just outside the box to rattle the crossbar as Jets goalkeeper Kelsey Wys covered the effort.

Shortly after the physicality continued when goalkeeper Wys went down after a midair clash with Glory’s Di Bernardo. Wys immediately signalled for the Jets physio before being carried off the pitch with a suspected knee injury.

After the brief break in play young Clare Wheeler took the ball from Perth’s central defender Kim Caroll before chipping the ball to Jenna Kingsley. Patricia Charalambous blocked Kingsley’s shot at the six-yard-box.

Perth Glory responded with a cross to a fast paced Sam Kerr, granting herself a free header that fell just short of Claire Coehlo’s goal. Then on 21 minutes a Perth corner secured Kerr another header that was scrambled off the line by a desperate Jets defence and finally cleared by Wheeler.

American import and Jets midfielder Arin Gilliland placed a perfect ball over the head of Kim Caroll before an off centred shot by Kingsley soared over the goal.

Nicole Stanton wasn’t taking any prisoners when she took down teammate Bernardo in the air in the 27th minute. Bernardo fell awkwardly on her arm before retaking the pitch.

The second half began with some desperate defending from Perth Glory which resulted in a studs up challenge on Jennifer Hoy and granted Newcastle a penalty. Hoy capitalised on the opportunity, effortlessly slotting the ball into the net from the penalty spot to make it 1-0.

Emma Stanbury was taken down for a freekick just shy of the corner post, with young Sophie Nenadovic stepping up to take it with her left boot. The ball curved perfectly before rattling the top of the crossbar.

After 74 minutes Kerr beat Jets defender Megan Oyster to create a one-on-one opportunity with goalkeeper Coelho who blocked the shot with ease to maintain her team’s advantage.

With three minutes of added time, Glory’s Alyssa Mautz almost equalised the score line when an off-footed Nenandovic missed the ball, allowing the attacker an open shot on goal.

It would remain 1-0 to Newcastle Jets in front of a decent crowd, ending a poor run of home form for the club, who now sit atop the Westfield W-League ladder.
