Physical F3 Derby ends in stalemate

-

The Mariners controlled the first half of the F3 Derby before Newcastle Jets found their legs in the second half to secure a point at home.

Newcastle defender Nicholas Cowburn highlighted the Jets frustration shortly into the first half with a strong tackle on Fabio Ferreira. The physicality toward Ferreira during the opening minutes of the match granted the Mariners several freekicks early on.

Finally on 28 minutes a long range effort from Jets’ Devante Clut forced Mariners goalkeeper Paul Izzo to make a jumping save, earning the Jets a corner that saw another effort go just shy of the net.

Central Coast’s Roy O’Donovan took his studs to Jets goalkeeper Jack Duncan’s ankle in a desperate attempt to open the scoring for the away side. A freekick was awarded but rather controversially a card was not handed to the Mariners number nine.

Storm Roux was granted a freekick just shy of the 18-yard-box and Ferreira stepped up to swing the ball into to a diving Jake McGing’s head to open the scoring for the Mariners in the 42nd minute.

The Mariners’ McGing was awarded a yellow card shortly into the second half, before Andrew Hoole stepped up to take the freekick and almost recreate the Mariners goal. A swinging ball in connected with defender Jason Hoffman’s head and narrowly missed the goal.

A one-on-one challenge with goalkeeper Izzo saw Jet’s attacker Morten Nordstrand secure the equaliser for the home side in the 63rd minute. Nordstrand slotted the ball between the Mariners goalkeepers legs comfortably to make it 1-1.

The Mariners showed their frustrations when a deliberate handball just outside the 18-yard-box secured Rose his second yellow. With 10 men defending, Andrew Hoole stepped up to take the freekick for the Jets straight in front of goal, soaring it over the crossbar.

A run down the line in the dying minutes saw Cowburn slot the ball onto the goal line before a Mariners defender headed the ball off the line. Jets striker Kokko went to attack the second phase of play before he was headed in the nose in a last ditch effort by a desperate defender.

Another exciting F3 Derby would end 1-1, a decent result for the two sides who both now sit on six points at the wrong end of the Hyundai A-League table.
