10-man Sydney end year on high with win over Brisbane

-

Sydney FC continued their spectacular undefeated start to the season with a comfortable 2-0 win against Brisbane Roar in front of a vocal 16,000 strong crowd at Allianz Stadium.

The home side eased to victory against a lacklustre Roar despite a 65th minute red card for captain Alex Brosque – strikes from Brosque and Milos Ninkovic either side of the break sealing the win.

The sides were evenly matched during the early stages as both teams sought to play themselves into the game.

Sydney captain Alex Brosque was the first to properly test either goal, his 16th minute near post flick flying just over the bar after an inch perfect cross from Filip Holosko.

Josh Brillante provided Brisbane with their best chance of the half after 31 minutes following a push on Thomas Broich on the edge of the area. The resulting free kick from Dimi Petratos was expertly placed by the midfielder, forcing an excellent two-handed save from a diving Danny Vukovic.

It was only a matter of time before Sydney found their shooting boots, with Alex Brosque opening the scoring after 36 minutes – easily slotting home past Michael Theo for his eighth goal of the season after being played through by fellow forward Bobo.

And the captain should have doubled the lead just minutes later. Michael Zullo’s deft pass finding Brosque free in box, but his curling effort failed to curve past Michael Theo.

Brisbane were not without chances of their own, but an in-form Vukovic proved more than a match for the Roar strike force – denying Petratos with a double save just before the break.

Sydney started the second half stronger, and Brosque should once again have put the hosts ahead by two. The veteran did well to steal the ball off Thomas Kristensen and spin away before playing a lovely one-two with Bobo, but his final shot proved too close to Theo.

Brisbane were unlucky not to level proceedings after 57 minutes, Manuel Amara finding the crossbar with a delicate lob just minutes after coming on for Tommy Oar.

The home side finally capitalised on their countless efforts with a 62nd minute strike from Ninkovic doubling the lead for Sydney after another fine assist from Bobo.

The Sky Blues were forced to play the remaining half an hour a man down, skipper Alex Brosque deservedly shown a second yellow for clipping Luke De Vere.

But Brisbane failed to test the ladder leaders, the visitors noticeably frustrated at their lack of chances as the game descended into a fiesty finale.
