Newcastle Jets secured all three points in the dying minutes at McDonald Jones Stadium with a 2-1 win over Adelaide United in Round 11 of the Hyundai A-League.
It was the away side who heaped on the pressure early however. Henrique was fed a long ball, earning himself a foot race with taller opponent, defender Ivan Vujica. The two fought, but the Adelaide striker got his shot away, beating Jets goalkeeper Jack Duncan but sending it just wide of the post.
Newcastle would be the first to strike and a composed Devante Clut lost his defender with his sight on goal, before playing it square to unmarked teammate Andrew Nabbout.
Nabbout slotted it under Eugene Galekovic in the 28th minute to open the scoring for the home side.
The second half opened up much like the first ended, with continual transition play from both sides. An overlapping run from Jets fullback Vujica provided a one-two for Nabbout with the defenders cross falling just short of attacker Devantes’ feet and failing to increase the home side’s lead.
A foul by Andrew Hoole on Adelaide’s Henrique in the 67th minute led to Spanish import Isaias’ swinging in a freekick that proved too forceful for goalkeeper Duncan to grasp and leveling the scores at 1-1.
In added time both Wayne Brown and Hoole had opportunities to secure their team the three points with breakaways that proved unsuccessful.
Morten Nordstrand came to the rescue and secured his team the win in the 93rd minute to make it 2-0.
A newly revived Newcastle Jets squad has swapped their lackluster start to the season with a new-found thirst for goal to secure a 2-1 win against the travelling Adelaide United.
