Newcastle Jets soar over woeful Glory

-

Perth Glory’s ten game unbeaten home run is over after Newcastle Jets claimed a dominant 2-1 victory at NIB Stadium.

It is a result that is sure to raise more eyebrows for Kenny Lowe, as the early season title favourites look well short of their lofty expectations.

For Newcastle Jets, it is their second win of what has been a woeful season, and Mark Jones will use this match as a precedent for the rest of the season.

Liam Reddy was the clear stand out for Perth throughout the match, on hand to make numerous magnificent saves that prevented what should have been a blowout victory for the Jets.

The Glory shot stopper was forced into an early 4th minute save after Jason Hoffman smashed an effort on goal from 20 yards.

The Glory played their best in the opening 20 minutes, and in the 7th minute Nebojsa Marinkovic fired home after Chris Harold’s excellent wing play beat Ivan Vujica.

From then on, the Jets assumed ascendency in the match and equalised through Andrew Hoole in the 21st minute.

The Jets number seven was played in by Devante Clut after Josh Risdon was caught too far upfield, and expertly tucked away the resulting shot past an on-rushing Reddy.

Hoole had a glorious chance to double his team’s advantage in the 42nd minute, but failed to square the ball to Andrew Nabbout who was perfectly placed for a tap in.

But the first half was perfectly summed up by an own goal scored on the stroke of half time by Glory midfielder Milan Smiljanic.

The Serb attempted to clear an Andrew Nabbout cross with his head, however miscued horrendously to put the ball into the top right corner of his own goal.

Newcastle Jets entered the halftime break 2-1 up.

The second half began with Adam Taggart and Smiljanic both being replaced for Kosta Petratos and Brandon Wilson, however the fresh legs made no real difference for Perth.

In the 56th minute, Mateo Poljak fired a shot that collected Wayne Brown on the way through to goal, however the ball lobbed onto the roof of the net.

The Jets should have sealed the game multiple times in the second half, however lacked that killer instinct to score the sealer.

In the 83rd minute Perth ‘keeper Reddy produced the two best saves of the match.

Clut was first denied in a one-on-one, after linking with Hoole in the build up. Nabbout was first to follow up Clut’s shot, however Reddy remained big and made a second save.

From that point on, Newcastle managed the clock professionally and held on to bag three valuable points.

The Glory play Sydney FC at NIB Stadium next week with big changes required to obtain a result in against the table-toppers.
