Wanderers sign Sydney FC keeper

-

Western Sydney Wanderers have turned to their rivals for reinforcements confirming the signing of Sky Blues goalkeeper Vedran Janjetovic on an 18-month deal.

While the Wanderers already have a number of former Sydney FC players in their ranks, this is the first time, since the Wanderers’ first season, a player has made the switch straight from the Sky Blues to Western Sydney.

The Janjetovic deal comes in the wake of a tumultuous time in goals for the red and black with neither Andrew Redmayne nor Jerrad Tyson able to make the spot their own this season.

Yet to keep a clean sheet after 11 A-League games the Wanderers have turned to Janjetovic, who made exactly 100 appearances for Sydney FC, to solve their problems.

A regular for the Sky Blues last season, Janjetovic was forced to the bench this term after the club signed Danny Vukovic. Unhappy with the decision, the 29-year-old was granted personal leave from the club he spent five seasons with before having his contracted terminated allowing him to sign for Western Sydney.

The one-time nemesis of Wanderers supporters, Janjetovic will be hoping he can win over the fans and his fellow teammates.

“I live just around the corner from our training base so it feels like home. I’ve been welcomed by everyone. It’s been a good start,” he said after signing with the club.

The club’s CEO John Tsatsimas applauded his arrival and hopes fans will too.

“Bringing players to the Western Sydney Wanderers who learned their football in Western Sydney is always a positive and we look forward to seeing our fans welcome Vedran with open arms,” said Tsatsimas.

Wanderers goalkeeper coach Zeljko Kalac reportedly pushed to be reunited with the player he once trained and Janjetovic was only too happy to comply.

“He’s the best goalkeeper coach in Australia.

We’ve worked together before, I know what to expect from him, he knows what to expect from me so we get along really well,” Janjetovic said.

Having not played a game in some months, he admitted more than a few hurdles await him.

“I haven’t trained in a little while so I’ve got to get up to speed. There are a lot of challenges ahead but I’m looking forward to every single one of them,” he said.

Janjetovic’s arrival means out of favour Andrew Redmayne, who only has six months left on his contract, will likely be forced out of the squad and could start looking for a new club.

Fan favourite Jerrad Tyson, who started last week’s game against Wellington Phoenix, should keep his starting spot for at least another week but now faces fresh competition for the spot in goals.
