W-League | Second half hattrick stuns Sky Blues

-

Newcastle Jets have pulled off an incredible upset win at Lambert Park, with a 3-1 victory over W-League leaders Sydney FC in front of 1,029 supporters.

A second half hattrick from Arin Gilliland stunned the home crowd and ensured the Jets go into the final week with a real opportunity to snatch a place in the final four.

Sydney started the game with an air of confidence worthy of a team sitting top of the ladder, with Caitlin Foord nearly putting the home side ahead after just two minutes. Her volley from the edge of the area bouncing narrowly wide of the far post.

The Sky Blues were dominant in possession early on but failed to capitalise on their chances, with Francisca Ordega skewing a fine chance after a great run from Foord.

Newcastle largely struggled to get on the ball, with their few chances coming courtesy of Jennifer Hoy’s pace on the break.

As the half wore on Sydney looked increasingly frustrated by their failure to capitalise on possession, resorting to aimless crosses which were easily dealt with by the impressive Jets centre back pairing of Oyster and Davis.

The ever dangerous Foord should have put the Sky Blues ahead after 31 minutes after being fed through on goal by Kyah Simon, but her heavy touched saw the ball trickle into the grateful hands of Katelyn Rowlands.

The Jets’ best chance of the first half came with five minutes to go, when Hoy found herself in space on the edge of the box, but her effort lacked power and was easily saved by Shamiran Khamis.

Both teams came out of the sheds firing and it was the Jets that made it count after 57 minutes, their patience rewarded with a goal from Arin Gilliland. Sydney were unable to clear a loose ball from the area, and it was Gilliland on hand to stroke the ball home from close range.

Despite maintaining their dominance in possession Sydney just couldn’t convert their chances, with both Foord and Alanna Kennedy coming closest.

But it was the Jets again who proved the more lethal in front of goal, sealing victory with just over ten minutes to go thanks to a quick brace from the rampant Gilliland.

The forward grabbed her well-deserved hattrick curtesy of a looping header over Khamis in the 74th minute, and guaranteed the upset win with an easy finish three minutes later.

A consolation goal for Simon in the final minute of stoppage time proved far too late for the Sky Blues, who may well rue the performance as a massive missed opportunity to get their hands on the premiership.
