Wanderers salvage draw with Perth Glory

-

A goal in either half has seen Western Sydney Wanderers and Perth Glory share the spoils in a 1-1 draw at ANZ Stadium.

With a spot in the top six on the line, this was a game both sides clearly wanted to win with Joseph Mills shown a yellow card after just five minutes for a heavy challenge on Dimas.

The Wanderers captain picked himself up and fired over the crossbar on ten minutes after some great build-up play from Nicolas Martinez.

A seemingly offside Adam Taggart had no such trouble finding the target in the 14th minute however as he opened the scoring for the Glory firing strongly past Jerrad Tyson after some quick passing from Perth.

After a quiet period of play, Western Sydney wasted a golden chance to draw level after 28 minutes with Jumpei Kusukami worming his way into the box and squaring it for Martinez in front of goal only for the winger to pull his effort high of goal.

Just minutes later the Wanderers again failed to make the most of a ball in the box with Jumpei unable to get a shot away in a promising position.

Dominating possession, the red and black finally made Liam Reddy work in the 39th minute when Mitch Nichols fired an effort on target from range with Reddy doing well to make a diving save.

The last chance of the half fell to young Wanderers striker Lachlan Scott who couldn’t direct a header from right in front on target.

It was a stuttering start to the second half with Western Sydney struggling in the final third and Glory content to sit back.

Two Wanderers substitutions would make a big difference however when they linked up in the 67th minute to pull the home side level. Midfielder Kearyn Baccus playing a lovely ball over the Perth defence to Jaushua Sotirio who kept his cool to slot home.

Perth were a constant menace on the counter and almost had their lead restored in the 75th minute when Aritz Borda nearly put the ball into his own net.

Diego Castro then drilled a free-kick over the crossbar in the 87th minute as both sides searched desperately for a winner.

In injury time, Rostyn Griffiths scuffed an effort wide from inside the box for Glory while Nichols was caught offside in the box for the Wanderers as the points were shared.

A fair result in the end with Western Sydney temporarily back in the top six courtesy of Sotirio’s equaliser though they are still searching for a first home win of the season.
