Record breaking Sky Blues ease past hapless Jets

-

Sydney FC continued their extraordinary season with a 2-0 victory over the Newcastle Jets which sealed an A-League record 66 points for the season in front of 15,787 supporters at Allianz Stadium.

Second half goals from Milos Ninkovic and Alex Brosque sealed the easy win for the Sky Blues, while Andrew Nabbout’s first half penalty miss summed up an abject display from the cellar dwellers.

Sydney showed their intent from the off, and it was Filip Holosko’s first minute effort that almost put the hosts ahead but for an outstretched Jack Duncan leg.

Newcastle looked happy to take their chances on the break as the Sky Blues controlled possession, with Nabbout looking to exploit the gaping holes in the Sydney defense.

The Sydney fans were on their feet howling with derision after 14 minutes when Ninkovic appeared to be clipped in the box, but referee Shaun Evans wasn’t forthcoming with a penalty. Replays confirmed the man in black was spot on with Benjamin Kantaroski making an excellent last ditch tackle to block Ninkovic.

With the traffic coming from one direction the home side looked increasingly frustrated with their inability to find the net despite a number of close chances – Alex Wilkinson coming the closest with a 34th minute header which ricocheted off the crossbar.

And the sides looked to be heading into the sheds scoreless at halftime but for a late piece of drama when Andrew Hoole was awarded a 41st minute penalty following some clumsy pressure from Rhyan Grant. However, Nabbout failed to put the Jets ahead with a horribly struck effort that whistled well wide of the post.

The home side’s unrelenting pressure finally paid off in the 56th minute, with Ninkovic grabbing his 9th goal of the season with the easiest of tap-ins after being fed through by Holosko.

With few chances coming their way Andrew Hoole missed a golden opportunity to draw the visitors level in the 64th minute, but the winger absolutely butchered his effort – skying his effort well over the bar despite having ample time and space.

Alex Brosque should have sealed the win in the 83rd minute following Lachlan Jackson’s error, but the Sydney captain hesitated long enough for the Jets defense to scramble back despite being one-on-one with Duncan.

Brosque redeemed himself just four minutes later though, volleying home Brandon O’Neill’s cross to ensure the victory and A-League points record for the Sky Blues and consigning the Jets to a likely wooden spoon.
