A-League 2017/2018 club previews (in 25 words or less)

-

We take a quick gander at what the new season of the Hyundai A-League could hold for your club.

Adelaide United

Although coach Marco Kurz will make the Reds tougher to beat they’re still bereft of firepower needed to challenge. Where are the goals coming from?

Predicted finish: 9th

Brisbane Roar

Off-field headaches are mellowing for Brisbane and should new arrivals commit wholeheartedly to project Aloisi the Roar will be finals certainties.

Predicted finish: 3rd

Central Coast Mariners

Expect further improvement from the Mariners under the impressive stewardship of Paul Okon, but old frailties will cut hopes of finals football short. Just.

Predicted finish: 7th

Melbourne City

Melbourne City boast one of the competition’s strongest rosters as usual but can new gaffer Warren Joyce break the club’s cycle of chronic under-performance?

Predicted finish: 6th

Melbourne Victory

The return of Mark Milligan gives Kevin Muscat’s side a great chance of returning to the summit of the competition.

Predicted finish: 1st

Newcastle Jets

Ernie Merrick isn’t a miracle worker. However, the A-League’s elder statesman will restore belief and competitive edge to the steel city. Eventually.

Predicted finish: 8th

Perth Glory

Glory can mix it with the competition’s best and worst. Unfortunately, Kenny Lowe’s side are too inconsistent and soft-centred to mount a genuine championship assault.

Predicted finish: 5th

Sydney FC

Sydney will struggle to hit the imperious heights of last season but are the still the league’s canniest operators and remain the team to beat.

Predicted finish: 2nd

Wellington Phoenix

Phoenix have marked this season as the beginning of a prosperous new chapter but it could just as easily prove to be another false dawn.

Predicted finish: 10th

Western Sydney Wanderers

Popovic’s shock exit has thrown the Wanderers’ preparations into disarray but a solid roster means the club should still expect a finals finish.

Predicted finish: 4th
