Newcastle Jets W-League 2017/18 Season Preview

-

Following a number of big name departures, the Newcastle Jets women will be looking to replace and rebuild in a bid to push for an elusive finals berth in the 2017/18 season.

Last season:
W-League: 5th

They’ll win the league because…

This is coach Craig Deans’ third season at the helm following two solid seasons finishing not far outside finals contention.

He will look to build on the experience gained from the past two years to push the Jets into the conversation for the top four and a shot at claiming their first title.

Deans, who won Coach of the Year following the 2015/16 season, will do some of his most important business in pushing towards the finals dream, if they are able to retain the services of captain Gema Simon.

They’ll be cellar dwellers because…

They’ve lost a number of international players including as well as Rhali Dobson and Liana Danaskas who were vital to their 2016/17 season.

The Jets will have to recruit well before the start of the 2017/18 season in order to replace a raft of talented players including club equal top scorer Jen Hoy.

The squad will have to step up if they’re to come close to their 5th place finish last season.

The Jets have only ever qualified for the finals once, way back in the first season of the W-League.

This season they will undoubtedly be looking to turn this fortune around and break into the top four for the first time in eight years.

The offseason brought…

Defensive reinforcement. Following the loss of 2015/16 player of the season and defensive stalwart Megan Oyster, the club announced the signing of three new defenders.

Tash Prior, Hannah Brewer and Nikola Orgill have all signed as the club look to rebuild a backline that conceded just 18 goals last season.

This is also the first offseason under the ownership of Martin Lee so watch this space to see the improvements made when the full squad is officially announced.

Key player

It’s hard to go past club captain Gema Simon. While she is yet to be officially announced as signing on for this season following an off season stint in Norway, it is hard to imagine the 27-year-old will end up anywhere but back at Newcastle.

The Matildas midfielder played every minute of every match for the club last season as they fell just short of a spot in the finals.

The Jets will be looking for Simon to continue last season’s form that included 180 completed passes, 35 interceptions and three assists.

One to watch

Hannah Brewer. The 24-year-old right back returns to Newcastle following season long stints at Melbourne Victory and Canberra United, as well an appearance for Melbourne City.

Brewer, who last played for the Jets in the 2013/14 season has improved markedly since leaving and has added maturity and composure to her game thanks to years of experience elsewhere in the league.

Confirmed players for 2017/18 season…

Claire COELHO (GK), Hannah BREWER, Cassidy DAVIS, Nikola ORGILL, Tash PRIOR, Gema SIMON (reportedly), Panayiota PETRATOS.

The club are expected to announced the full squad shortly.
