Laura Bassett: Summer heat will be a test

-

Summer is upon us and with it comes burning-hot long days on the pitch.

It’s a factor we don’t always consider but it will definitely make everyone play differently.

It might mean teams sit in a bit more compact for a little bit longer or keep possession for extended periods so they can rest while they have the ball so we will of course do our best to adapt.

You get on with it and deal with it the best way you can. As a senior professional I make sure to eat and drink the right things and do anything and everything possible to make sure I can perform.

The heat is definitely going to be a factor but hopefully it’s not too bad. Fingers crossed our Australian girls who are used to it can get us through what will be a tough period.

We’ve got three really big games before Christmas now and the goal is to go through them unbeaten especially after such a great 3-2 win over Perth Glory on the weekend.

All three goals on Saturday were really special and came at such crucial times.

I personally haven’t scored in years so to get on the score sheet to get us across the line in such a important game was a great feeling.

We can’t get carried away though and have to keep building, stay grounded and keep working hard on the training pitch.

With the addition of Elise Thorsnes on the weekend I really believe we now have one of the best if not the number one attacking force in the league.

Elise, Michelle Heyman and Ashleigh Sykes have gelled so well and they all offer such different attributes that really compliment each other.

They’re becoming a force to be reckoned with and it’ll be great to see them all in action against Brisbane Roar on Sunday.

It’s another game at home at McKellar Park where we have a 100% win ratio this season so we’ll be looking to keep that run going.

There’s no reason we can’t do that but we also know how challenging these big games are going to be so we have to be realistic.

Our aim is always to win and we’re prepared to work hard day in day out on the training pitch so we’re at the top of our game come the weekend to give our fans the performance they deserve.
