All square between Brisbane and Mariners

-

Brisbane Roar were left frustrated in their maiden home fixture of the 2018/19 season, hosting the Central Coast Mariners at Suncorp Stadium.

A game in which the league’s controversial VAR system featured frequently, the score was kept at 1-1.

Connor Pain got the visitors off to an early lead in the 3rd minute, capitalising on a quick break made possible by Brisbane left back Connor O’Toole’s over-commitment in attack.

A questionable offside decision a few minutes later denied Brisbane what could have been an immediate chance to level the scores, something which became all too familiar for the hosts throughout the game.

For the Roar, Adam Taggart had an absolutely horrid first half on debut, skying what should have been two sure-fire goals.

Brisbane opened the second half aggressively though, forcing two excellent saves from Mariners keeper Ben Kennedy in the first few minutes alone.

After Taggart had a goal controversially disallowed by VAR in the 60th minute, he came back strong, finally bagging his maiden 2018/19 strike in the 64th minute.

VAR reared its head again for the hosts just ten minutes later, the Roar having a penalty disallowed after Taggart was initially judged to have been brought down unjustly.

Central Coast were also denied by the officials shortly after, with Kalifa Cisse having his headed goal declared offside.

The Roar will obviously be disappointed to split the spoils with what should have on paper been a very beatable team for them.

The ultimate takeaway from the match will obviously be the use of VAR especially when it’s unclear the right decisions are being made through its use.
