A second-half strike from Ronald Vargas was cancelled out by a Craig Goodwin header as Adelaide United and Newcastle Jets played out a stalemate on Friday night.

Ronald Vargas fired the Jets into the lead in the 52nd minute but Craig Goodwin showed his worth with a sensational header only minutes later.

United’s defence was to blame for the Newcastle opener as their poor defending saw Jason Hoffman able to find Ronald Vargas alone in the box before Vargas blasted the ball past a helpless Paul Izzo.

However, the jubilation didn’t last long as Craig Goodwin got on the end of Michael Marrone cross with a thunderous header to restore parity for United.

Goodwin’s goal was a continuation of his fine work in the first-half where he was continually Adelaide’s main attacking threat in a dour 45 minutes.

The frantic nature of the second-half continued moments later, as Jair played in Jason Hoffman with a delicate cross which Hoffman fired straight into Paul Izzo.

The entertainment-packed second-half was a polar opposite to the first-half which was bogged down with fouls and a defensive struggle.

In the first-half, Adelaide were strangled by Newcastle’s intensive pressing which saw Paul Izzo often forced to lump the ball down field.

However, despite the pressure created by Ernie Merrick’s side, they were unable to translate the field position into something more telling on the scoreboard.

Craig Goodwin created the best chance of the first-half, striking a free kick from just outside the box in the 40th minute which lashed the crossbar to the relief of Glen Moss.

Goodwin was the outlet for United again in the 42nd minute, after he latched onto a long throw-in and got in behind Newcastle’s defence before firing into a waiting Moss.

The final minutes topped off a spiteful game, with Michael Jakobsen and Daniel Georgievski at the centre of a melee which saw Paul Izzo run the length of the field to be involved and subsequently yellow-carded.
