Late show gives Glory win over Mariners

-

It’s the sight we’ve grown used to seeing: Chris Ikonomidis scoring at the death to give Glory a dramatic victory.

On Sunday, his late winner gave Perth a 3-2 victory against Central Coast Mariners at nib Stadium.

A slick team move by Glory in the 12th minute saw Ikonomidis fire home his first goal and the opening goal of the game for the hosts.

The attack began with Neil Kilkenny chipping the ball behind the Mariners’ defence to Joel Chianese who slid the ball into the path of Ikonomidis to finish.

The Mariners went very close to scoring when Connor Pain’s marauding run into the box led to a left footed shot which stung the palms of Liam Reddy.

But a minute later the Mariners had their equaliser when Tomislav Mrcela deflected an Andrew Hoole cross into his own net. The calamitous mix-up between Mrcela and Liam Reddy from Hoole’s deep cross drew the Mariners back into a game dominated by the Glory throughout the first half.

After a dull start to the second half, all that changed in a frenzied few minutes when Perth regained the lead through Shane Lowry. The centre back rose highest to flick the ball into the net off a drifting Kilkenny cross.

Once again though, the Mariners struck back quickly when Aiden O’Neill fired a rolling ball from outside the box into the roof of the net only minutes later.

Glory were granted a final opportunity deep into stoppage time, when Kalifa Cisse received a second yellow card for a challenge on Ikonomidis and was sent off.

The Mariners were made to pay for Cisse’s mistake when Neil Kilkenny made the most of the extra man to float a cross to the back post in the 95th minute.

Andy Keogh fluffed his lines with an attempted bicycle kick and the ball fell to Ikonomidis who blasted the ball high into the roof of the net, giving Glory another victory and some breathing space atop the A-League table.
