A return to form: Jets back on track after beating Brisbane

-

The Newcastle Jets put on a show at McDonald Jones Stadium on Sunday afternoon in their 2-0 win against Brisbane Roar.

It was their best overall performance of the season, and saw debut goals for both Kaine Sheppard and Jair. The Jets have been inconsistent early on in the season, and gave fans a performance worthy of their excitement.

The first half was an even battle, and both teams had a handful of half chances. It seemed like both teams would be heading into the sheds all square at half time, but Kaine Sheppard opened the scoring for the Jets just before the half time whistle.

Daniel Georgievski found himself in some space on the right flank, and drove a low cross into the path of Sheppard on the near post who steered it into the bottom corner with the outside of his left boot.

The Jets flew out of the blocks for the second half when a Vargas header struck the post following a pinpoint cross from Georgievski.

Shortly after, Dimi Petratos broke away for a counter attack which resulted in a two-on-one situation. He played it into the path of Jair who smashed it home and celebrated with genuine passion.

Brisbane were unable to find a way back into the game as the Newcastle defence was organised and robust.

The Roar threw everything at the Jets in the final 10 minutes, but were kept quiet and ultimately fruitless.

Jets were gifted back-to-back clear cut chances in injury time, but were unable to grab the third.

In the end two goals were more than enough, and the Jets walked away with three important points and a much needed boost of confidence.
