Popovic ponders good questions as Glory prepare for Premiership charge

-

As Perth Glory sit seven points clear on top of the A-League table with nine games to go, people are starting to ask the question: can the league’s perennial underachievers really become premiers?

It’s a question Glory boss Tony Popovic would prefer his players to answer; not through their words, but through their actions.

“I think the question will be raised, but I think it’s a question we should embrace,” Popovic said ahead of Glory’s home clash with Brisbane Roar on Saturday night.

“We are being asked now if we can stay at the top, so it’s a good question to have to answer.

“The best way of answering that is by our actions.

“Words are one thing and they won’t be remembered on Saturday night, our actions will be remembered.

“If we can continue with the great action we’ve shown so far on the pitch it’s a nice problem to have.”

A crucial 2-1 away win against title contenders Melbourne Victory last Sunday extended the gap between the two sides in first and second place on the ladder.

It was a landmark moment in a fantastic season which has prompted pundits and fans around the country to pencil Glory’s name on the premier’s plate with a third of the season still to play.

“We are seven points clear for a reason,” Popovic said.

“We’ve been the most consistent and best team up to date and after 18 rounds that’s where we deserve to be.

“Now it’s up to us to try and keep that gap by winning against Brisbane at home.

“At the end of the year, if we’re there [on top] after nine games that is something we can celebrate.”

Perth burst out of the blocks at the start of the season and Popovic’s side have occupied top spot since round four, showing no sign of nerves in what has been a solid and consistent campaign.

Glory full-back Jason Davidson, who has been in stellar form in his first season in Perth, says although there is pressure involved with leading the pack Glory aren’t the only team feeling the heat.

“At the end of the day it’s a good pressure you want to have,” Davidson said.

“Other teams have the pressure of chasing us, or trying to get into the top six, or not having a good season.

“So for us it’s a good pressure to have, we take it on board and embrace it.

“It’s what we’ve been doing all season – working hard – and we are where we are through hard work and we need to continue that.

With a third of the season left to play Davidson says he and his teammates are aware of the commanding position they are in, but complacency does not breed in a club with Popovic at the helm.

“We’re all humans at the end of the day, we definitely look at the ladder and see where we are,” Davidson said.

“I think to be fair if everyone knows how hard Popovic works and the coaching staff, nobody can be complacent in this regime.

“As a team collectively we’ve got targets we want to accomplish and to do that we just need to work hard.

“We understand as a team collectively we’ve only got here because of hard work, and we’re a good team so to continue that form we need to stick to what we’ve been doing all season.

“Hopefully at the end of the season we’re champions.”
