Top five Newcastle Jets moments this season

-

The Newcastle Jets are one game away from wrapping up their season and it’s time to take a look at their best moments from an otherwise inconsistent and frustrating A-League campaign.

5. Angus Thurgate’s first A-League goal (Round 24 – Western Sydney Wanderers)

Thurgate had been in and out of the squad for the entire season, and once Newcastle’s finals hopes were essentially over, Ernie Merrick gave Thurgate an opportunity to shine with more game time. Boy did he take the chance when he scored the winner against the Wanderers.

A Kaine Sheppard through ball aimed for Roy O’Donovan was cut out for by the Wanderers defence and the rebound landed perfectly for Thurgate, who made no mistake and absolutely buried it into the far corner. It was Thurgate’s first A-League goal in 14 appearances at the time.

It was such a positive moment at a time where there wasn’t much excitement for Jets fans at all. Toward the back end of the 2018/19 season, the performances of both Thurgate and fellow youngster Joey Champness were outstanding and promised a bright future.

4. Beating Melbourne City in congested circumstances (Round 19 – Melbourne City)

A highlight this season for the Jets was their flutter in the Asian Champions League qualification stage. After defeating Persija Jakarta 3-1 in extra time (more on that later), the Jets had a very important clash with Melbourne City.

Despite playing their third game in just eight days, the Jets dismantled City in a 3-1 win which kick-started their push for the finals. It was a masterclass in counter-attacking football, and was an outstanding performance from a weakened and fatigued Jets squad.

3. Jair breaks his drought (Round 7 – Brisbane Roar)

Jair is likeable and it’s a shame that we’re unlikely to see him in a Jets kit again. He radiates passion for the game, but he was too inconsistent and struggled to get up to speed with regards to his fitness.

The moment when he scored his first goal was magic, and 90% of the magic came from his celebration. Dimi Petratos was leading a trademark Jets counter attack and rolled the ball into the path of Jair who smashed it home into the roof of the net. He celebrated like a fan. Arms pumping followed by a knee slide. Pure ecstasy and it was one of the best moments of the season.

2. Boogaard’s winner in the ACL (Round 2 ACL Qual. – Persija Jakarta)

Nigel Boogaard is a common scapegoat of criticism at the Jets. He’s no stranger to an untimely penalty or a red card, so it’s always nice to Boogs get on the scoresheet. He did so in style in the ACL qualifier against Persija Jakarta.

The Jets took the lead at the start of the second half and Persija soon equalised, taking the game into extra time tied at 1-1. Petratos swung in a corner, and a Ben Kantarovski header fell to Boogaard free on the back post who made no mistake and buried it.

It was Boogaard’s third goal in 17 ACL appearances, and capped off a special night for the Jets and kept their ACL dream alive.

1. Dimi Petratos screamer against Melbourne Victory (Round 21 – Melbourne Victory)

This goal can’t be described with words just watch this.

It came out of nowhere and it was so beautifully unnecessary. It was extra special because it was against Victory, who won the league in Newcastle in the previous season with a helping hand from the man upstairs.

Dimi Petratos had an average season, but it doesn’t mean he can’t pull out stuff like this when he’s in the mood. Oh and he’s right footed…

Bonus moment: Jair’s colourful pronunciation of the ‘FFA Cup’.
