Who are the A-League’s clean sheet kings?

-

The humble clean sheet – the backbone of many A-League triumphs and victories both small and significant.

Some teams have been better than keeping shutouts than others over the years.

Here we dissect how many clean sheets have been accumulated by each of the current 10 A-League outfits since the 2012/2013 season.

The 2012-13 campaign was the first time all current 10 sides competed in the A-League and that has continued right up to the present 2018-19 season.

Sydney FC have kept a total of 61 clean sheets since 2012-13, the most out of any side in the competition.

The Sky Blues kept an A-League record 16 of them in the 2016-17 season where they went on to claim grand final glory. It was a sensational season where their clean sheet percentage stood at a formidable 57.14%.

Adelaide United’s 13 clean sheets in 2015-16 is the second highest in the leagues history and like the Sydney based outfit, the reds went on to clinch the title in the same campaign.

Keeping stalemates does not mean teams are destined to become champions. Ask the Melbourne Victory who last season kept just four clean sheets in 27 matches before going on to claim their fourth championship.

The Victory kept a club record nine in 2014-15 and have not managed double figures in the last seven seasons.

Like the Victorians, Brisbane Roar, Melbourne City, Newcastle Jets and the Wellington Phoenix have not managed at least 10 clean sheets in the same time span.

Over to the west side of the country, Perth had not managed to accumulate 10 until this season, where they could possibly tie Adelaide’s record if they manage to shut out their next three opponents.

The Central Coast Mariners are the only side in the last seven campaigns that has ended up with zero clean sheets in a season, first in 2015-16 and they’re on course to repeat it again in 2018-19.
