Sydney FC take the points in Kogarah

-

Sydney FC sit in second following a cagey 2-1 Big Blue win against an under-strength Melbourne Victory.

Both sides tried to control possession early on and assert dominance into the contest.

The opening period was a dull affair with neither team finding rhythm.

Ola Toivonen had a header sail over the crossbar following a wicked ball in from auxiliary winger Corey Brown.

Adam Le Fondre had a snap-shot soon after. Following quick feet from Kosta Barbarouses, the ball landed near the Englishman where he struck his effort wide.

Melbourne drew first blood through Toivonen. A wicked ball in from Joshua Hope found the Swedish international who headed past Andrew Redmayne at the near post.

The game moved to the second half and Luke Brattan fired an early warning shot from outside the box over Lawrence Thomas’ bar.

Toivonen struck a few nerves into Sydney fans with his free-kick sailing just wide of the goal.

Sydney soon had parity. Alex Wilkinson won his header from the corner where the ball fell to Le Fondre, who slotted the ball home.

Sydney quickly took the lead through Barbarouses. A Brandon O’Neill cross found Rhyan Grant, who chested the ball to the Kiwi, who took two attempts but found the net.

A swift counter attack should have sealed the result, but Thomas made a smart save to deny O’Neill.

The Sky Blues’ held on for the result, which puts them second on the ladder with a game in hand of Melbourne City in first.

Sydney travel to Perth next Saturday for a grand final rematch whilst Melbourne travel to Adelaide in the original rivalry.
