Sydney smoke the Jets in Leichhardt

-

Sydney FC have shrugged off last week’s disappointing derby loss with a 4-1 victory over the struggling Newcastle Jets at Leichhardt Oval.

The match was an entertaining affair for the neutral, with both sides having meaningful opportunities early on until Sydney ran away with the game.

The Sky Blues started out of the blocks strong. A long ball from Rhyan Grant was misread by Jets skipper Nigel Boogaard and found Adam Le Fondre, but his shot went just wide of the onrushing Glen Moss.

Six minutes into the contest the champions had their breakthrough. Luke Brattan whipped in a cross which found Serbian maestro Milos Ninkovic, who tapped it home for a 1-0 lead.

The Jets hit straight back. Attacking outlet Dimitri Petratos found the oncoming Matthew Millar from a set-piece, where the defender buried his header to make it 1-1.

Auxiliary forward Jason Hoffman then had a chance to give the visitors the lead but fluffed his lines following a cross.

Just before the interval, the home side had the advantage once more.

Socceroo Grant delivered a neat cross into Le Fondre who produced a true strikers finish to make it 2-1.

The second half began and Sydney almost immediately scored off a corner from Alexander Baumjohann. It found Ryan McGowan who deflected the ball into John Koutroumbis which sent Moss the wrong way for a 3-1 lead.

The champions were out of sight soon after by increasing the scoreline to 4-1. A slick ball in from Brandon O’Neill set up Kosta Barbarouses for his first competitive goal in Sky Blue.

Newcastle almost reduced the deficit late on when veteran Nikolai Topor-Stanley rose highest from a corner forcing Andrew Redmayne into a smart save.

After a year out with injury, Trent Buhagiar had the chance to score to increase Sydney’s lead further but scuffed his shot into Moss’ arms.

Sydney will rest up following their win with a bye next weekend and the Jets return to the Hunter next weekend where they will face defending premiers Perth Glory.
