Wellington Phoenix secure first points of season

-

Wellington Phoenix have come away from AAMI Park with their first points of the A-League season after a 1-1 draw against Melbourne Victory on Sunday.

It was another controversial moment from VAR which saw the Nix score the opener after Ola Toivonen was adjudged to have handled the ball in the penalty box in only the second minute of the match.

Ulises Davila stepped up to the spot to give the away team an early 1-0 lead.

From that moment though the first half was all Victory with the home team unable to capitalise on a host of chances: including two narrow misses from Toivonen as well as Stefan Marinovic saving two good opportunities from James Donachie and Jakob Poulsen respectively.

The second half began more evenly but soon swung Victory’s way as the home team continued to create multiple chances.

Two of the early opportunities fell to Toivonen with the big striker unable to convert until midway through the half when he finally hit the back of the net following some fancy footwork in the box.

Following the equaliser, Melbourne went on the attack but could not crack the Phoenix defence despite two clear chances for Toivonen to take the lead.

The first saw a smart save from close range by Marinovic before the second opportunity was shot wide after a nice cut-back from Adama Traore.

Sharing the points helped neither side in the race with Wellington still stuck in last place and Victory still unable to crack the top six.
