Adelaide bounce back in the heat

-

Despite playing in 36-degree heat Adelaide United have defeated Newcastle Jets 2-1 after being second best for the majority of the match.

Newcastle were on the front foot early as Ben Kantarovski’s header forced Paul Izzo to parry the ball out for a corner from Dimitri Petrato’s looping free kick.

Mathew Millar then picked up the ball and beat two players on the right after he dispossessed Nikola Mileusnic but his cut back to Nicholas Fitzgerald cannoned off Izzo’s near post.

The Reds then had an opportunity to attack through Al Hassan Toure, who was sent through after a Lachlan Jackson mistake allowed the young striker the opportunity to run towards goal but Nikolai Topor-Stanley was there to clean up and nullified the danger with a block.

Newcastle were extremely unlucky not to take the lead through Angus Thurgate whose tap in was extraordinarily saved by Izzo after Ugarkovic’s shot rocketed off the cross bar and resulted in a goal mouth scramble.

Just moments later, Adelaide went down the other end and took the 1-0 lead through George Blackwood. It was Toure who found space on the right, beat Johnny Koutroumbis and cut the ball back to Blackwood who did not miss from six yards.

A minute before the break, the Jets had a penalty decision waved away by referee Chris Beath and VAR after Thurgate beat Izzo to the ball and was seemingly fouled.

Five minutes into the second half, the Jets got their reward as they equalised 1-1 through Miller who rose highest from a corner for a header to beat Adelaide’s zonal marking.

Newcastle continued to put the Reds and Izzo under immense pressure as he saved his side from conceding on numerous occasions after the equaliser.

Adelaide coach Gertjan Verbeek responded by replacing George Blackwood with Nathan Konstandopoulos, as he looked to inspire his side and it did just that.

After being second best for the majority of the second half the Reds found the winner through James Troisi. He received the ball from a Michael Maria throw-in, dropped his shoulder, skipped past Jackson and fired the ball into the net for a 2-1 lead.

Newcastle coach Ernie Merrick made a double substitution late in the match but it was not to be as the Reds bounced back from last weeks defeat.

Adelaide head into the bye with three points but Verbeek has much to ponder as his side was under pressure for the majority of the match.
