Menacing Perth Glory put six past Newcastle

-

Perth Glory have enjoyed a convincing win and their best attacking performance of the season in a 6-2 victory over Newcastle at HBF Park. Diego Castro and Bruno Fornaroli both scored twice in the dominant performance.

Castro opened the scoring with a trademark free kick that curled around the wall from 25 yards out, directly in front and beat the outstretched fingertips of Glen Moss.

As rare as it is for a Castro free-kick to be surpassed in quality within a half of football, Newcastle’s equaliser may have done so. A free kick delivery by Dimitri Petratos was headed on by Lachlan Jackson, and in turn by Matthew Millar and finally by Nikolai Topor-Stanley, who after a sluggish first half, used his head to turn the ball past Liam Reddy.

A first half riddled with skill errors from defenders and a huge number of free kicks now had two goals far beyond the quality of the half they inhabited.

Newcastle’s defensive vulnerabilities would cost them soon after though when Ben Kantarovski brought down James Meredith in the box and Neil Kilkenny converted from the penalty spot.

The game saw its third spectacular goal when Joel Chianese, who had come into the side for Chris Ikonomidis, took two touches on the edge of the box and scored with a powerful shot that found its way inside the far post.

The scoring hadn’t finished there however, with Steven Ugarkovic combining in a passing play with Petratos, who played the former in on goal to reduce the tourists’ deficit.

The play opened up significantly in the second half, allowing Castro to get in behind the Jets’ back four and play a ball into Fornaroli in the box. His shot took a wicked deflection off Kantarovski that was enough to wrong foot Moss.

Glory nearly had a fifth and Fornaroli a second in their very next foray forward, but this time the striker’s curling effort could only find the right upright.

Fornaroli did have his brace before too long with a driven effort from another Castro assist and by this stage the pair were wreaking havoc against a sluggish Jets defence. Fornaroli was good, but it was Castro who was the star of the day, scoring a second goal inside the last ten minutes to partner his two assists.

It appeared new signing James Meredith had scored Perth’s seventh goal but a Joel Chianese hand ball was found by VAR in the build-up.

After two consecutive home games, Perth are on the road again next week to face Central Coast Mariners before their second bye round for the season, while Newcastle face Brisbane Roar in their next game.
