Sydney beat City despite early send-off

-

In a match which had goals, a red card and a missed penalty – it was easy to see why this was the top of the table clash between Sydney FC and Melbourne City.

The first chance came when Sydney’s Adam Le Fondre crossed to Kosta Barbarouses but he back-heeled it wide.

The deadlock was broken following a cross from Craig Noone who found Connor Metcalfe to head home the 1-0 lead.

The game changed instantly after. Socceroos right-back Rhyan Grant’s high-footed challenge on Nathaniel Atkinson received a yellow card that was then upgraded to a red card following VAR intervention.

Parity was restored shortly after. Alexander Baumjohann’s cross landed to Milos Ninkovic – where Harrison Delbridge’s clearance fell to the inform Englishman Le Fondre to finish and make it 1-1.

Noone then threw in a contender for miss of the season – beating a number of Sydney defenders only to curl his shot past Andrew Redmayne’s post.

Ninkovic then provided a moment of magic. After beating Metcalfe and a one-two with Baumjohann, the Serbian drew a foul off Delbridge in the box. Thomas Glover then saved his side by keeping out Le Fondre’s penalty.

Redmayne was forced into a save down low following Noone’s shot early in the second half.

Jamie Maclaren attempted an audacious scissor-kick shortly after which went agonisingly close.

Moments later Jubilee erupted. Barbarouses cut inside onto his weak foot to finish the late winner into the corner.

The result pushed the Sky Blues nine points clear atop of the A-League ladder.

Sydney’s next fixture is at home to Adelaide United and City will host Western United in a derby on Friday.
