All-time top five A-League clubs in the Asian Champions League

-

A-League teams have been competing in the Asian Champions League since 2007 and have produced many highlights, none better than the Western Sydney Wanderers winning the whole thing on their first attempt.

Out of all the Australian clubs to have competed in the ACL, who has done the best? We present the top five A-League sides to have competed in the ACL, based on games played, won, drawn and lost. Goals scored and conceded are also noted.

While they have not played in the competition since 2017, the Reds boast the best stats from ACL games. Out of a total of 42 games, they have won 18, drawn 10 and lost 14. In their 42 games, the Reds have scored 57 goals and conceded 44, a goal difference of +13. Their best campaign was in 2008, finishing runners-up to Gamba Osaka over two legs. They made the quarter finals in 2012, but have not been able to produce another good run since.

The Victory have played the most games of any A-League side but have never made it past the Round of 16, which they did in 2016. Out of 48 games, they have won 14, drawn 13 and lost 21. In that time, they have scored 62 goals and conceded 86, for a difference of -24. For one of Australia’s most successful clubs domestically, they Victory have struggled in Asia, having only made it out of the group stage once.

The Wanderers pulled off a miracle to win the ACL on their first attempt and are currently the only A-League side to have won it. They have not been able to replicate that feat however, and in their two attempts since, they did not make it out of the group stage. They have played a total of 26 games with 12 won, four drawn and 10 lost. They have scored 38 goals and conceded 39, a difference of -1.

Like the Victory, the Sky Blues are notorious for struggling in the ACL. Their best effort was in 2016, making the round of 16 before losing out to Shandong Luneng Taishan on away goals. That was also the only time the Sky Blues managed to make it out of the group stage. Out of 33 games, they have won seven, drawn 14 and lost 12. In terms of goals, they have scored 33 and conceded 46 for a difference of -13.

  1. Brisbane Roar

The Roar have had a rather horrid time in Asia. They have never made it out of the group stage, and in some cases did not even make it past the qualifying stages. Who could forget the debacle that was their match against Ceres-Negros. Out of 22 games, the Roar have won five, drawn six and lost 11. They have scored 27 and conceded 39, a difference of -11.

Will anyone ever be able to follow in the steps of the Wanderers and win the Champions League? Only time will tell.
