Three injury time goals were the decider in the match between Canberra United and Adelaide United, as the nation’s capital clawed their way back from a 0-2 deficit to take all three points in a 4-3 win.
Canberra were down 0-2 after the first 45 minutes, before Michelle Heyman secured her side’s 4-3 triumph with a hat-trick in the second half.
Adelaide dominated the first half on the score sheet, and with more possession and composure, as Marja Rojas and Isabel Hodgson scored off both of their on-target shots to take the 2-0 lead.
Canberra had plenty of opportunities themselves throughout the first half, but were unable to convert thanks to goalkeeper Sian Fryer-McLaren. She proved crucial in the opening 45 minutes of the match.
There was plenty of aggression shown by both sides early on, with three yellow cards handed out in the first half.
Within minutes of the second half commencing, Heyman kicked things off by finding the back of the next to get the goal scoring momentum going for Canberra.
The side applied more pressure on Adelaide’s defence and was rewarded, with another Heyman goal to level things up 2-2.
The fight for the three points continued late into the second half as each side dug deep into injury time, with three goals scored in the space of four minutes.
Before a screamer from Laura Hughes, from outside the box, secured the nation’s capital their first lead of the game 3-2 in the 91st minute.
Two minutes later, Heyman completed her hat-trick to put the visitors ahead 4-2.
Adelaide refused to roll over and Mallory Weber scored her side’s third goal a minute later. However, it was too little too late for the visiting side, going down 4-3.
