United in a scoreless draw for season opener

-

A cagey opening match for the 2020/21 A-League opener saw Adelaide United and Western United go scoreless at GMHBA stadium.

Although finishing 0-0 this match had plenty of exciting moments, led by the young debutants from each team.

The best chance of the game fell to Adelaide United through Tomi Juric, who managed a spectacular half turn that played Halloran in on the left only to have his shot scuffed away by Aaron Calver.

Both sides looked fairly rusty with sloppy possession and silly fouls committed in the early stages of the match.

Adelaide United managed to start the first half strong, with debutant Yaya Dukuly providing the majority of his team’s energy.

Adelaide maintained the lion’s share of possession in the first half, culminating with a Tomi Juric chipping the keeper in the 34th minute, only to have his shot cleared off the line by Tomoki Imai.

Western United managed to get themselves a nice shot at goal in the with Alessandro Diamanti shooting a thunderbolt at James Delianov in the 40th minute from a well-worked build up.

Besart Berisha managed to get himself in a scuffle with right-back Ryan Strain, following what appeared to be a stomp from Berisha. The striker is lucky there’s no VAR this season.

With a much more subdued start to the second half, both teams managed to have more sustained periods of attack.

As the second half progressed both sides managed to have far more attempts on goal with the game really opening up.

Both managers made early substitutions with Berisha making way for Ayom Majok Ayom, whilst Adelaide took off young debutant Dukuly for fellow youngster Pacifique Niyongabire.

Ultimately it was the goalkeepers who starred in the first game back for the A-League, the match filled with almost’s and nearly’s.

Taking away an early point won’t be too upsetting for either side, but a goalless draw wasn’t the most impressive start to the 2020/21 A-League season.
