Five undeniable reasons Matt Simon is the GOAT

-

Pele, Diego Maradona, Lionel Messi, Cristiano Ronaldo, move aside – there’s only one wizard of Woy Woy.

Matt Simon is coming to the end of a glorious career which started with his professional debut back in 2006 and it’s time for everyone to finally admit that the Central Coast Mariners striker is the greatest player of all time.

Simon grew up on the Central Coast and was signed to the Mariners after impressing in the local competition. After an impressive six years with the Mariners, Simon was sold to the Jeonnam Dragons but his spell in South Korea did not work well and he returned to the Mariners.

After being told he was not needed by the Mariners management, Simon followed coach Graham Arnold and moved to Sydney FC for three successful seasons before the Mariners finally realised their mistake. Simon was brought home to the Mariners and was made club captain. Here are five reasons why Simon is the GOAT.

5. He’s got the best nicknames

Fans of Simon have given him numerous memorable nicknames over the years. The Wizard of Woy Woy, a fun alliteration on a suburb on the coast, the Albino Messiah, a reference to Simon’s very white appearance and his godhood and, my personal favourite, the Seagull – which was given to him by Sydney fans for the way he annoys opposition defenders much like a seagull after your hot chips.

4. He is an Olympian

That is right, Simon represented Australia in the 2008 Beijing Olympics making him an Olympian. Simon was brought in to replace Archie Thompson and played in the Olyroos game against the Ivory Coast. It was also the closest we got to seeing Simon face off against Messi, however Simon was not available for the game.

3. His trophy cabinet is full

Simon has an impressive trophy cabinet after a long career in the A-League. He won the premiership with the Mariners in the 07/08 season and after moving to Sydney, won the premiership again in the 16/17 and 17/18 seasons. Simon had grand final success with Sydney in the 16/17 season and added the FFA Cup to his trophy cabinet when Sydney won the competition in 2017.

2. He’s the Mariners’ leading goal scorer

Simon has won the Mariners Golden Boot a record six times in his three spells with the club, and is also the record goal scorer with 56 goals for the club (as of 24/1/21). Simon has scored some very important goals over his career and holds the A-League record for latest goal in a game when he scored a winning penalty against Melbourne Victory in the 100th minute.

1. He’s the most passionate player you’ll find

It is almost undeniable that Simon is the most passionate player in the A-League. When he steps on the field he always gives 100%. While some opposition fans think he may go too far, it is an integral part of his game and playing style. It’s that passion Simon would not be the GOAT.
