Melbourne Victory unable to break Western hoodoo

-

Melbourne Victory suffered a 4-3 capitulation at the hands of a 10-man Western United thanks to a 95th minute Victor Sanchez strike.

This result extends Victory’s winless record against Western since the club’s formation, with just one draw from five attempts.

Grant Brebner admits that this record is becoming a problem that does not have a specific answer.

“It’s a hoodoo that we haven’t beaten them, and we’ve drawn against them earlier in the season.

“It’s a stat we don’t like.”

Tonight’s loss was another example of bad luck against Western United, rather than a true reflection of the game.

“Arguably we should have got a result tonight whether it is a draw or winning the game.

“It is gut-wrenching,” said the head coach.

As such, Brebner remains proud of his team’s character to find a way back from a 3-1 despite the defeat.

“At 3-1 down with the players we had out there, a lot of young players, to get back in the game is pleasing.

“At 3-3 I’d argue with anybody that there was only one team that would go on and win it and I didn’t think it would be Western United.”

The coach remains eager to meet Western United for a third time this season and avenge this defeat.

In the meantime, Victory will look to bounce back against Melbourne City next Saturday night at Marvel Stadium.
