Restrictions shut down active support

-

It is no longer a surprise to see Australian football fans treated like second-rate citizens. It is merely a regular, systematic occurrence.

During a time when nightclubs were allowed open, the Victorian state government issued an order to ban active support at A-League matches.

A prime example was Melbourne Victory’s clash against Perth Glory.

Interestingly, these COVID-19 measures came at a time when Victoria marked more than 20 days without community transmission cases.

It is difficult to understand this contradictory logic. One would think the virus is extremely intelligent, as it seemingly does not target those partying inside cramped indoor settings.

Instead, it only goes after fans who actively support their club in the stands in an outdoor environment.

These are definitely not ‘minor changes to match day experience’ and calling them as such, is a slap in the face to fans.

Sure, we can feel lucky to even have match days, but no prizes for guessing, this did not go down too well with the supporters.

This article may not have been written if drama had not occurred in the stands.

As Victory scored two very late goals to grab a thrilling comeback win against Perth, fans were understandably pumped.

They even went as far as standing for longer than regulations permitted.

One would think that common sense would prevail and they would be told to be seated. Unfortunately that was not the case.

Instead, members of the police force began filming the crowd.

We do not know what will happen next, but it may lead to even tighter restrictions on Victorian-based clubs from authorities.

This is another reminder that everything football fans do is always inspected under a microscope.

If nightclubs are to be open, then this set of rules and the overall treatment of fans must be changed.

After all, football supporters deserve basic respect, no less than those who want to attend indoor public events.
