Strong Bobo return not enough for unlucky Sydney FC

-

Sydney FC and Brisbane Roar were forced to share the spoils in an entertaining 0-0 draw at Netstrata Jubilee Stadium on Saturday night.

The first half was an arm wrestle, with both teams working well as defensive units.

The Sky Blues dominated Brisbane in the second half, hitting the cross bar twice – while Brazilian Bobo was thwarted a dream winner on his return for the Sky Blues by a remarkable Jamie Young save.

“I think in the end we should have won it,” said head coach Steve Corica.

Corica said he was disappointed that his side could not find a winner after the triple substitution of Brattan, Baumjohann and Bobo – which sparked the game into life.

“[We had] three very good players coming off the bench… it’s unfortunate we didn’t get the three points.

“I’m a little bit disappointed. I think we deserved it… we created the better chances”

The Sky Blues looked like a different side after the change, with Brattan and Baumjohann controlling the midfield. Rhyan Grant was twice denied from six yards out – first by the crossbar and then by the post.

“I don’t know how it didn’t go in,” said Corica.

With Bobo’s introduction, Sydney looked to use the Brazilian as a target in the air. They bombarded Brisbane’s penalty box with a series of crosses. Bobo was desperately unlucky not to score the winner on his return to the club, after his header produced a wonder-save from Jamie Young.

Despite the draw, Corica said that the return of Bobo was pleasing for the Sky Blues.

“When he [Bobo] came on there was more balls coming into the box… that’s his strength, he’s good in the air.

“He’s dangerous, that’s his first game in quite a while. I’m pleased, he’s always in good areas to score.”

Sydney fans will be praying that Bobo’s return can spark Sydney’s attack into life. By their high standards, they have struggled in front of goals this season – scoring eight goals in six games.
