Brebner takes responsibilty for Victory’s worst ever loss

-

Melbourne Victory suffered their biggest ever defeat, courtesy of a 6-0 thrashing by Melbourne City.

The game was a show of complete domination by City, who controlled the possession and limited Victory to no shots on target.

Victory coach Grant Brebner admitted giving up control of the ball was not part of his matchday instructions.

“They were better than us all night tonight,” said Brebner.

Despite the performance, he remains confident the match was not a true reflection of his side’s capabilities.

“This squad is absolutely better than what we’re showing in league position and better than what we showed tonight,” he said.

“I feel trust in the squad, but tonight was a real poor showing.”

While admitting some big-name players were poor on the day, Brebner refused to shift responsibility upon anyone else.

“I will not sit here and lay blame on any of the players, because it would be easy to take pot-shots at players,” he said.

“Finger should be pointed at me; I am the head coach of this football club.

“I take responsibility for nights like tonight, I am not going to push the blame on anyone else.”

Brebner said no position in the squad remained safe and fans should expect changes for next week’s match.

“There will be changes. There have to be changes after a result like that,” he said.

Victory will look to bounce back against Adelaide United next Saturday night at Marvel Stadium.
