Melbourne City would have been happy to walk away with the three points, but were instead gifted an even better ending – as Rhali Dobson scored a goal and got engaged to her partner Matt Stonham.

City had prepared a celebration for Dobson after the game, yet before proceedings could get underway her partner got down on one knee on thr Frank Holohan turf and popped the question.

The proposal was captured by Fox Sports during their post-game wrap up and beamed out to thousands of people live.

It capped off an incredible night for Dobson as she scored in her final W-League game, retiring to support her fiancee through treatment for brain cancer.

Dobson was visibly emotional during her thank you speech and had much of the remaining crowd in tears, as they became caught up in the excitement of the moment.

Despite the win, City coach Rado Vidosic was clearly more overjoyed with the post-game aspect of the match.

“I knew we had prepared something for her last game, but I had no idea that [the proposal] was coming,” Vidosic said.

“As a person she’s fantastic, she was here one year before I came and I always brought her back, she was fantastic in my first and second year.

“She’s been affected by Matt’s diagnosis, it’s a tough time, and it was quite hard to get back into the normal football life … but she’s been fully committed, scored goals and played some great football.”

Fox commentator Teo Pellizzeri summed it up well.

“For a team that’s used to finishing the season holding the trophy, this has to be up there. This is the sort of thing that makes the fabric of a club, sometimes it’s winning and sometimes, it’s moments like this.
