Garcia: Silly VAR decision ruined the game

-

Richard Garcia believes the penalty awarded to Matt Simon should not have been given, after it resulted in a last minute draw between Perth Glory and the Central Coast Mariners.

Perth were enjoying a one goal lead but in the 86th minute Matt Simon and Luke Bodnar clashed in the box. After a lengthy review by the VAR, referee Kurt Ams awarded a penalty to the Mariners which allowed them to even up the game 1-1.

Garcia could not believe the penalty was given and was critical of several decisions that went against his team through out the match.

“Silly VAR decision that ruined the game,” he said.

“I thought it was a good challenge, it’s just a clash of heads. I’ve never seen that called a penalty in my life.”

The penalty decision against Bodnar came during his A-League debut. However, Garcia was full of praise for his young centre back and said he had a great game.

He refused to blame the officials, but was critical of how VAR handled things.

“Referees are just doing their best, I think it [VAR] gets in the way,” Garcia said.

Garcia said there were plenty of positives to take away from the game and he was happy the fire was back in his squad after poor showings in previous games.

“I saw that hunger and that fight that we probably have lacked in the past few performances” he said.
