Glory fly up the ladder after narrow win

-

Perth Glory sealed their first win in five games last night, taking down Newcastle Jets 2-1 at HBF Park, surging to seventh on the A-League ladder.

Glory had a strong start to the match, keeping on top of the ball throughout the opening five minutes and making it hard for the Jets to gain possession.

Late in the 5th minute Osama Malik obtained the ball just outside the box and made a cross to Ciaran Bramwell, who completely missed the ball.

Jets striker Roy O’Donovan was quick to take possession and make a fast break down the field where he finished past Liam Reddy before he was called offside.

Glory sealed the opener of the night 17 minutes in. Bramwell finished a cross from Castro, sending the ball into the  net’s far right, solidifying his first A-League goal and points for Perth.

They were quick to double their lead, Darryl Lachman earning a second goal for the squad with a header in the 24th minute, a result of Neil Kilkenny’s strategic long throw-in.

Crowd favourite Johnathan Aspro did not make half-time, after he received a second yellow card for bowling over Jets winger Ramy Najjarine in the 35th minute.

Early in the 45th minute O’Donovan tried once more to close the gap for the Jets, sending a toe-kick into the underside of the crossbar but it was saved by Reddy.

The Jets came out inspired for the second half. They applied more defensive pressure and dominated possession in the opening 10 minutes, in an effort to redeem themselves.

Redemption came in the 59th minute when O’Donovan toed a strike from Nikolai Topor-Stanley into the top right to make it 2-1, the first of the night for the Jets.

Pressure from a potential Jets comeback saw Glory keeper Reddy put in the books for timewasting in the 73rd minute.

Determined to maintain their lead, Glory fought for the ball in their half, hungry for a victory and making several chances for themselves. The end-to-end ball play sparked hustle from both teams.

In the end the purple army prevailed with a 2-1 victory over Newcastle, jumping to seventh position on the ladder and making the finals series within reach.
